Cleaning Windows After Construction: Avoiding Scratches

Brand new windows are a beautiful feature of any renovation, but they are often left covered in manufacturer stickers, silicone, paint overspray, and plaster dust. Cleaning them incorrectly is the number one cause of scratched glass in new builds.

Never Use Dry Blades

The biggest mistake homeowners make is taking a razor blade to dry glass to scrape off paint or stickers. This will inevitably cause micro-scratches. Always lubricate the glass generously with a soapy water solution before using a professional glass scraper. The soap creates a barrier that allows the blade to glide over the glass while lifting the debris.

The Proper Technique

Start by vacuuming the window tracks to remove loose debris. Wash the glass with a strip washer and soapy water to soften adhesives and plaster. Carefully scrape any hard debris while the glass is wet. Finally, use a high-quality squeegee to remove the water and wipe the edges with a lint-free microfiber cloth. If dealing with tempered glass, be extra cautious, as it scratches more easily than standard glass.
